Caring for your leather pieces
"Embrace the Exquisite Craftsmanship: Handmade with Love and Care
Owning a handmade piece is a rare privilege, and each style requires a little extra attention from its new owner. Here are some invaluable tips to ensure your Mahiya Leather creation remains a cherished companion for years to come:
1. Know Your Leather/Suede Types:
-
Cow Leather: Durable and thick, ideal for hand-tooled designs.
-
Milling Cow Leather & Milling Goat Leather: Softened and refined through a meticulous tumbling process.
-
Suede: Soft and thin, crafted from the underside of the animal skin.
Remember, these materials come from real animals and may bear unique marks, adding character and charm.
2. Proper Care:
- Use a dustbag or old pillow case for storage
- Avoid applying unknown chemicals or waterproofing to hand-painted pieces.
- Refrain from scraping the leather to prevent damage to the painted surfaces.
3. Suede Care:
- Perform a patch test before applying suede protector, especially on lighter shades.
- Lift dirty marks gently with a soft bristle toothbrush for best results.
- Avoid rubbing, as it may worsen the stain.
4. Protecting Gemstones:
- Be cautious of hard surfaces to prevent any potential cracks.
5. General Maintenance:
- Avoid exposure to constant direct sunlight and keep in a cool, dry room.
- Avoid contact with grease and oil to prevent staining.
- Do not wash any Mahiya Leather pieces.
6. Fringe Care:
- Hang up fringe-adorned bags and gently massage to straighten them.
- Refrain from pulling on the suede or leather.
7. Dealing with Mould (for Leather, not Suede):
- Use an everyday moisturizer to gently rub out mould on milling goat leather.
Remember, avoid moisturizers on suede, as they can cause marking and damage.
8. Handling Your Bag:
- Hang your bag on the back of your chair when out and about, avoiding contact with the ground.
- Avoid overloading to ensure the longevity of these hand-sewn treasures.
